The safest tea kettle materials

The useful question is not which metal is safest. It is which makers will tell you what their kettle is made of.

The short answer: 304 stainless steel, borosilicate glass and porcelain enamel are all inert and all fine. The thing worth avoiding is plastic in the water path, and the honest reason is taste rather than alarm. Heated plastic can carry a faint flavor into water, and tea is a drink where faint flavors are the entire point.

This page is not a health scare. It is a guide to reading a specification, because the genuinely useful signal in this category is not which material a kettle uses but whether the maker states it at all.

What the materials actually are

304 stainless steel

The standard food-grade alloy, sometimes written 18/8 for its chromium and nickel content. Non-reactive with water, does not corrode, does not hold flavors. COSORI publishes 304 food-grade stainless for the kettle, lid and spout; Fellow publishes 304 18/8 stainless for the Stagg EKG. When a maker names the alloy rather than saying stainless steel, that is a good sign.

Borosilicate glass

Glass with boron oxide in it, which makes it far more resistant to thermal shock than ordinary glass. Completely inert. OXO publishes a BPA-free borosilicate glass body for its adjustable-temperature kettle. The trade-off is visible limescale, which is cosmetic and also a useful reminder to descale.

Porcelain enamel over steel

A glass coating fused onto carbon steel. Le Creuset publishes porcelain enamel over carbon steel for its Classic Whistling Kettle and describes it as non-reactive and non-porous, which is the property that matters: it does not absorb flavors and it does not react with water. It chips if knocked, and the maker publishes hand wash only.

Aluminum

Light, cheap and reactive with acidic contents. Tea and water are not especially acidic, so this is a much smaller issue than the internet suggests, but there is no reason to choose it when stainless is available at a similar price.

Plastic

Fine on handles and lid pulls, which is where Fellow uses BPA-free plastic on the Stagg EKG. Worth avoiding in the parts water touches. The problem is not that a compliant food-grade plastic is dangerous; it is that heated plastic can impart a taste, and you are buying loose-leaf tea specifically to taste it.

How to read a kettle listing

  1. Look for the phrase describing what the water touches, not what the kettle is made of. A kettle can be a stainless kettle with a plastic water window and a plastic lid.
  2. Prefer a named alloy over a generic word. 304 food-grade stainless is a specification; stainless steel is a description.
  3. Check the lid and spout separately. Those are the parts most often quietly plastic, and COSORI's listing is unusually explicit about covering all three.
  4. Treat silence as an answer. A maker who publishes 304 for every water-contact part and a maker who publishes nothing are telling you different things.

BPA-free is a lower bar than it sounds

BPA-free means one specific compound is absent. It says nothing about the other plastics used, and it has become a marketing phrase attached to products where no plastic touches water at all. It is not a bad sign. It is simply much less informative than the phrase's prominence suggests, and it is not a substitute for a stainless or glass water path.

What about limescale?

Limescale is dissolved calcium and magnesium from hard water, deposited as the water boils. It is not a safety problem. It is a taste and efficiency problem, and it affects every kettle material equally — glass just makes it visible while steel hides it. Descale with a dilute vinegar or citric acid solution when you can see or taste it.
